August 2019, Week 4

August 2019, Week 4

The serenity and peaceful nature the farm provides is the perfect environment to create art. Join us for a day of watercolor art with Kara Aina as we paint a landscape of the farm right in front of us.

Kara Aina is an artist born and raised in New Brunswick, Canada and now resides in Sandy, Utah. She has a BFA and majored in Intaglio and Lithography Printmaking. She now paints in her studio primarily in watercolor, and occasionally in oils, ink, acrylic, and collage. Her work is inspired by connections and interactions she has with family, friends, and nature. In addition to being an artist she is a mother to 4 sons and is an art educator; currently teaching at the middle and high school level at a local school in the valley.

THIS WEEK IN YOUR SIMPLE SHARE..

Watermelon - one melon

Salt makes watermelon taste sweeter by creating a salty-sweet contrast that allows the sweetness of the melon to stand out. Watermelon often has a subtle sweetness to it because so much of it is water, unlike a strawberry or other fruit where the flavor seems to be very concentrated and intense.  Giving the sweetness a bit of salt to stand up against makes it seem much bolder. After eating a lot of watermelon samples, Kristi, who does the ordering for our Market, thinks Lemon Zest salt is the best on watermelon!

Lemon Zest Salt - one jar

Jacobsen Salt Co., founded in 2011, was the first company to harvest salt in the Pacific Northwest since Lewis & Clark built their salt works in 1805. Since then it has transformed from a local, small business to a nationally recognized brand as America’s leading salt maker. Harvested from the cold, pristine waters of Netarts Bay on the Oregon Coast, our flake and kosher sea salts have garnered worldwide favor for their beautiful presentation and pure taste by professional chefs and home cooks alike.
